Consider before purchasing 3pt fertilizer spreader

I had been considering buying a 3pt spreader for some time now to use on my pasture and hayfield. After a fair amount of research I decided the land pride model with poly hopper and SS spreader was the way to go. Then I talked to my dealer and found out the price (ouch) and that it wasn't QH compatible. I told this to my fertilizer dealer that took my soil samples and he recommended using one of their spreaders. I didn't think my 2601 could handle it, but it did nicely. The added bonus was that when I picked up the fertilizer (with my truck) it was already loaded in the spreader. I didn't have to handle one bag. Needless to say: I won't be purchasing a 3pt spreader. Note that I had less than 2,000# of fertilizer and I was on flat ground.

Absolutely! I wouldn't want that thing following me down a hill! If I could even get it up the hill to start

But, if you CAN use it, it's a great way to go. As good as fertilizer is for plants, it's equally hard on things made out of metal. Leave the upkeep and maintenance to the supplier when possible.

I guess if you only occasionally spread a lot of fertilizer that's the way to go. If you spread small amounts several times a year, that's probably not the best way. Plus I use my 3 pt spreader for seed as well. I bought the Land Pride for the SS plate since that seems to be the part that rusts the worst. Plus I think the gates are a better design than others. The one I had before used concentric plates in the bottom of the hopper that rotated for the gates, and one time the plates were rusted together. The Land Pride gates lift on the side of the hopper.

I think these are actually made by someone else because you can get the same thing (and replacement parts) at AgriSupply under a different name for a little less. I bought the LandPride instead so I wouldn't have to drive 1.5 hours. Wash it well after each use and once it dries coat everything with fluidfilm.

Agree with your logic scdeerslayer. That's why I titled the post "consider". I just wanted other hobby farmers like me to know that this option exists before going out and buying a spreader.
