i have a L2201DT and I am having issues with the pto gears while shifting the trans gears. seems to be no consistancy. Its like one wont engage or disengage and the trans keeps going with the clutch in i can find a time when the gears work but its the most strange thing ever

You may have a direct drive pto. Mine has one, i almost wiped out the neighbors fence bush hogging the first time. The spinning bush hog would keep the transmission turning over till it wound down. Installed an overrunning coupler to to the pto shaft to correct that issue :)

Thanks...Yeah luckely I had plenty of room to figure i wasnt stopping... I guess this is how the older ones are. I just bought this one with 6 pieces of attachments.

I hope I misunderstand what you said - you are not trying to shift the gears like you would a car to gain speed are you?

But yes, on older tractors, you may need to wait for the implement to stop before you can stop the tractor, or shift gears. This is very evident on brush hog/mowers and other spinning implements that build up spinning energy and continue to spin without power.

Best to install the aftermarket over running clutch (not to be confused with slip clutches that allow the PTO to turn even if the implement is jammed or hits a large object)

I run my mower in pto 1st , at 2000 rpms , just a little under pto rating. Any attatchment that carries momentum shouldnt be run over reccomended pto speed. If i need to stop, sometimes i can slip trans into neutral while rolling. Then i can stop. Then have to wait for pto so i can get back into gear. Its tricky backing up and mowing- to get into tight spots. I use the creeper gears for that.

Install an overrunning clutch to fix that problem.
It's common problem for a lot of Grey/Gray tractors as they did not install them from the factory.

the ORC will be a life saver, that $40 will keep you from going into the pond, into the fence, or ......off the edge, get ONE !!!!:D

cut the PTO shaft if you have to, but get the ORC (over running clutch)
