About 2 months ago I purchased a used Z781 with the injected Kawasaki, the machine had 100 hrs on it. At first the only problem I had was when releasing the parking brake and moving the arms in to move the engine would die. Pressing the brake several times and restarting the mower it would then work correctly, and this doesn’t happen every time, most of the time it works no problem. My dilemma started last week, I have put 30 hrs on the mower since I got it, all of a sudden the mower started cutting out and surging. I thought at first the fuel filter may be clogged as it appeared original. I then changed the fuel filter, air filters, and plugs, no change. As long as I keep the rpms under 2500 it runs and mows fine, but turn it up and the cutting out and surging starts. Could this be the throttle sensor/controller?

I have been watching/reading other ZTM threads on OTT, seems its common for stuff to clog up the fuel pickup line in the tank. Did you blow out the fuel line going into the tank?

Searching the forum can be challenging. You do a google search with "site:www.orangetractortalks.com" appended to then end of your search terms

The fuel filter is always full so I don’t think the tank is the issue, I would think if the line was partially blocked the filter wouldn’t be full

There is enough flow to keep it running a lower RPMs but not for when you rev it up or demand power.

Here is one of the threads:

I will try blowing the pickup line out, another thing is this one is injected not carburetated, so the fuel line is under a higher pressure. My problem is rpm related and doesn’t matter if it’s under load

I blew out the line and it’s open, but the fuel filter this morning was not full and it appears the lift maybe has taken a dump, I blew the line out several times but it will not fill the filter now. Could it be it has lost prime?

I blew out the line again and this time I applied air pressure to tank with the filter off and got a solid stream of fuel. Hooked all back up and started the mower and while running applied some air pressure to the tank but only got a trickle of fuel in the filter, what am I missing?

'gorf' or other 'debris' in the tank. best to drain tank, pull tank, inspect and properly clean tank......
it took me 2 hours to just clean the tank... found a 'slivver of black plastic' in the spigot.....

it's usually the brake linkage. Dumb design. Next time it does it pull the pedal backward toward you with your foot and see if that takes care of it. Often you can lubricate all the linkage points and it'll help for a while.

I don’t believe it’s my brake linkage, this morning I unhooked the fuel line on the inlet side of the fuel filter, fuel from the tank was present and running from the line. I hooked a short piece of line to the filter and placed it in a quart can full of fuel, it wouldn’t pull enough fuel to fill the filter or run higher than an idle. So I think I have eliminated all but the lift pump, I pulled the line out of the can while it was running and couldn’t detect any kind of vacuum on the line. Any other ideas?? Thx again for all the help and replies!

ok.

When you said pressing the brake several times helped, that was, at least in my mind, a dead giveaway of a linkage issue. But If you feel the fuel system is at fault, by all means follow your gut.

Did you ever figure out what was causing your issue?
