Tree root question

I have some large trees in the from yard. They have roots that are 2-4 inches above ground level which makes mowing impossible around them close to the trunk. I have a stump removal guy set up to take out a stump from a fallen tree.

My question is can I have him shave the roots off? Will it kill the tree? Would it be better to bring in dirt and try to cover the roots?

I would be covering the roots.

You cannot cover them or cut them. Tree will die.
You can fill up to even with them, but covering them will smother them and kill the tree.

The roots grow on the surface because there is not enough water down below for them to flourish, so I was told by a landscaper.

Generally they come up when the soil is too compacted for them to "breathe"

Cutting too much root will kill the tree. Burying a root that has developed some bark will cause it to rot. You may need to go to another option and that is to do some landscaping around the tree that does not include grass or covering the roots with soil.

I'm in the process of cutting these invasive trees down and pulling out the roots with my ripper.

Could be even worse were it Mulberry or Bradford Pear. Were it not for birds planting Hackberries many yards would be without trees. I believe that is testament to how many people never take time to plant trees.
