I have really been wondering what the thing is with my two TG1860G mowers. One has an FD590V-AS08 while the other has an FD590V-ES08. Something else to note is one has a HydroGear 312-3000 while the other has a 323-3000. Whats the real difference between the engines and hydros? They both have minor differences that I do not know why. One has a badge and the other doesnt even have the molding for a badge on the hood.

Your numbers, besides TG1860G, are all gibberish to me.
I only go by Kubota part numbers XXXXX-XXXXX
The TG1860G, used mutiple changes to the engine and mutiple changes to the HST's during their run.
The serial number tells you which one had what.

Those Hydro gear numbers will tell you 'what's inside' as well as torque, RPM, MPH (fwd/rev) and weight capacity. Just head to H-G website and 'search'.... you'll be able to get complete service manuals, parts list, etc.yes, it may take a few minutes, but well worth the time. Also get the 'how-to-purge' bulletin and any 'tech bulletins' that might be applicable. Knowledge is power !

Now as to why they're different HSTs for the 'same' TG1860g units, it could be one had the original HST replaced with what was on the nonKubota repair guys shelf, or ordered an 'upgraded' version of the HST( physically fits, but 'better' ). I don't KNOW the 'history' of the units, just passing on what 5 decades of 'small engine repairs'. Someone, somewhere must KNOW which H-G HST is the official Kubota replacement HST.
Right now it's a coin toss.....unless BOTH have been swapped in !!!

As far as research I have currently done, the 312-3000 should be the original. I have already tried to find any service manuals for the transaxle and the closest would be the 310-3000 but no exact match. H-G site shows nothing for me! As far as I am concerned, the only visual difference is that one has a drain plug or some sort of plug while the other doesn't.

The 323-3000 has a plug while the 312-3000 doesn't.

The one without the drain plug is probably the newer one, or made 'exclusively' for John Deere, seen that !

OK, use Google search 'hydro-gear 323-3000' , 1st hit is 1 page picture and parts list(hmm Kubota number there ), '312-3000' 4-5 hit, has the service manual !!

Often Google 'magically' finds stuff that SHOULD be easy to find on the manufacturer's website

Could you send a link? I have been searching for one for a while now and still can't find one without just buying a service manual for the whole mower (which I plan on doing)

Usually the service manuals will not point out differences in whole parts.

goto google search "hydro-gear 310-3000"
first hit is from them, click and PDF gets downloaded, there are several, others may be better ?

It's 4.8 MB, too large to post here

if you the other H-G numbers, you'll get other manuals, parts info as well....
I suspect differences are minor (no drain...) and maybe gear ratios/ top speed/weigh it can carry .

NO drain is a real pain ! Requires you to remove HST, CAREFULLY remove the 21(?) steel bolts from the aluminun case, turn upside down on 6by6 above drain pan,2 days to properly get 99.44% of oil out.

It'd be interesting to see what oil IS in the HST.

Maybe I could just steal the 323-3000 H-G out of the TG and put it into my other TG with the 312-3000 since the 312 TG is the one I actually use while the 323 TG is in much worse condition but still a good mower (minus the KRA that doesn't work so I cant back up while mowing with it)

It's an easy swap. Hopefully you have an overhead crane of some sort. Remove all the mounting bolts, cable, wheels, etc. LIFT machine up, pull HST out, lower machine onto blocks.
If you're young and healthy, easy morning might get both out. Me, I'd book a day per machine.
Have a box of bandaids handy

I've been looking at the 312-3000 compared to the 323-3000 exploded diagrams. It does really seem the only difference is that drain plug. Everything else lines up more or less except for the axle seals. The 312-3000 has a spot that it would look like it would go but its cast over with a smooth blank spot compared to where the 323-3000 is. I think it would be worth swapping to get that extra serviceability of these sealed-for-life transaxles!

You could check the gear teeth counts.,there might be a difference but may not matter.
drain plug is the 'option', requires drilling, tapping, cleaning , installing the plug so a few more steps and parts which increases the cost per unit.
I agree, if the drain plug version is a good HST, swap it in. But while it's 'on the bench', check the oil, read what H-G says to use for oil. Best to use a synthetic, while more money, stands up the heat !

Currently the 323-3000 is quieter than the 312-3000. I think I will change both transaxles oil. H-G says they both take 20W-50 oil so I would probably let both of them drain for a few days and then refill and do all the purging stuff once they are swapped into the mowers. Maybe I can see if I can just drill in a plug for the 312-3000 while its out of the mower!

When draining, slowly spin the input shaft pulley a few turns. It'll help 'purge' more oil out.
EASY to add the plug. Obviously the case will be off, drill small pilot hole, then correct size for the NPT pipe plug, remove 100% of the 'shavings'.

When 'splitting' the case, heat up the case screws and GENTLY crack them WITH a handheld screwdriver ! CCA, then CW, CCW,CCW, then CW, repeat until they ARE easy to remove. You need patience to get them out ! Use a power tool(impact) and odds are real good you'll snap the head of the bolt off, then spend an hour, per busted bolt, drilling out the remains and 'dressing up the tapped holes. Since there's close to 2 dozen of them, after 3 or 4 ,you'll get into a rhythm that works.
If you can, buy SYNTHETIC 20W-50, it'll be better high temperature,so less prone to vent fumes(aka lose oil ! )
