I envy you. Been retired for 24 years and can't go anywhere for very long since the wife refuses to retire. She enjoys working even though she doesn't have to. To add to the "get away" problem, is she got a puppy last January.

Enjoy! I took that Durango to Silverton steam train ride years ago and I will never forget it. Some of the prettiest scenery on God's green earth.

What a trip. Scenery was incredible and the train topped that. Would definitely do it again. We were the last car and I camped on that rear platform for most of the trip. IMG_2759.jpeg IMG_2718.jpeg IMG_2688.jpeg IMG_2680.jpeg IMG_2675.jpeg

Walked back to the Depot in Durango today. Watched a couple trains depart and then toured the free museum. You can get out by the turntable and see in the engine house. Off to do wife things for the remainder of the day IMG_2827.jpeg IMG_2824.jpeg IMG_2815.jpeg IMG_2814.jpeg IMG_2809.jpeg IMG_2806.jpeg IMG_2797.jpeg

Did the drive to Ouray. Stopped a bunch and did some hiking. Am I that out of shape or is it just the 10,800 elevation? My Native name would be Wind Sucker. If I hit the lottery, I would love to build a small cabin out here. Probably need a mini ex as well. Don’t think my current Orange would handle the terrain. When the wife & I married 47+ years ago, we honeymooned near Dolores, CO.
We took a day trip to ride the train.
When we got there, the parking lot was full of cops & sheriffs; someone had broken into & robbed all the cars in the parking lot for the second day in a row.
As we were in a canvas topped Landcruiser, we passed on the train ride.

Twenty years later, we went back for a second try.
When we got there, the parking lot was full of cops & sheriffs; someone had broken into & robbed all the cars in the parking lot.
We passed on the train ride again.

On a different tack, the scientist that I worked for in the Quartz research lab would jump on the train with 3 buddies, & leave the train at it's midpoint water stop. They carried minimal camping gear and no food.
They would fly fish in various creeks for the next week, and if they didn't catch fish, they didn't eat.
After 7 days, they would hike back to the train& catch the return leg back to their cars.

That is the next trip out here.
It’s a really good route. An all day 64 mile trip that crosses the spine of the Rockies and many different landforms and vegetation types. It’s really nice in early October when the aspens are turning. But those dates are often booked well in advance.

That elevation will definitely do you in, especially if you live at sea level or at least below 4000 feet elevation. I'm surrounded by high mountains here and experience that all the time. Made myself physically sick one time up on Mt Evans in Colorado (elevation 14,000+ feet) when I overexerted myself.

It doesn’t get much flatter than where we live and we are only around 900’.

The elevation where I live is at 6,900’. I do well up to about 10,000’ before I start getting short of breath.
