Started to explain the whole project that provided the impetus for this query. It turned into a short novel, so I’ve tried to just ask the question.
Thinking about getting a stump bucket. Not for digging up stumps, I have a stump grinder for removing stumps. Have a project of transplanting a dozen or so trees from the woods into one of our fields. If that goes well, the number may increase to an additional dozen in another area sometime later. As y’all know, getting a tree out from the woods with root ball intact isn’t near as easy as getting it out of a well spaced row in a field at a nursery. Looking to move the largest trees possible, 6’ tall / 1” stem minimum; bigger would be better. Definitely bigger than what I can get with a shovel.
Is it unrealistic to dig a few holes and rootball a few trees with a stump bucket? Do any of y’all dig holes and transplant plants with stump buckets on a tractor? If yes, how big of a tree can you move with it?
I can get a light duty stump bucket (no point in getting a CTL type for my little tractor) for $800 from the same local manufacturer that made my forks, with which I’ve been very pleased. Seems like something that would be useful occasionally for other stuff. If not, for $800 even if I never use it again, it’s less costly than the alternatives.
Yes, I could rent an excavator or hire it out to someone with a tree transplanter or buy trees from a nursery and dig holes with a shovel. And I might do one of those, but that’s not the question.
Thoughts?
