As my profile indicates, I have a L4701 HST which I owned a couple years before buying T2290, specifically a model RCK48P-90T. If you need 4WD, the T is out.
When we bought the T it was mostly because my wife hates zero turn mowers, she alleged she wished to mow the lawn, and we had a zero turn at the time. We went to a dealer, Sink Farm Equipment in Lexington, NC, that had GR’s and BX’s in stock. They also had a couple variants of T’s, a model I didn’t know existed prior to our visit. She and I were able to test drive all three. I was quite surprised the HST on the GR was jerky and difficult, maybe impossible, to make fine maneuvers with; no where near as smooth and responsive as the HST she and I were used to on the L. A BX without loader or backhoe was only slightly more expensive than the GR but the transmission performance was far superior IMO; very similar to the smoothness of the L. The GR felt like driving a better than average lawn tractor that had the bonus of 4WD. The BX was like driving a well refined basic, albeit tiny, tractor.
The T is a traditional riding lawn mower/lawn tractor. It was substantially less expensive than the GR. The transmission is notably smoother operating than the GR. I’m quite confident it would pull a lawn cart type thing designed for a lawn tractor. I wouldn’t try to pull my camper, equipment trailer, or even our little 5x8 box trailer with it. After much discussion we went with the T because that’s all we needed and all my wife wanted. She got the T, our son got the zero turn, and I’m pretty sure my wife has yet to mow with the T, but I like it anyway.
Couple of suggestions:
1) If you can find a dealer who has them in stock, test drive before you sign a purchase contract.
2) While you’re at the dealership, test drive a BX, particularly if the T isn’t enough for you. Compare the GR price to a comparably equipped BX (no loader, no backhoe). Things may have changed but quite possible you can get a lot more capable machine with the BX for not much more money.
Good luck with your choice.
