After operating backhoe both last night and tonight, there was a ping sound coming from the backhoe after I turned it off. It sounded like a loud drip into a metallic drain pan or something - every 30secs or so. It recurred tonight and I was able to isolate it to the dipper. Placing my hand on it I could actually feel a little pop. No visible leaks anywhere. What could this be? Could it be related to the HST loss of power problem? You had me at "backhoe". :D

I have no idea, but I'm sticking around to see what theories develop.

Off the top of my head the noise is caused by a gradual leakdown of boom and/or dipperstick cylinders.
