I have a two-year-old BX5450 front mounted snow blower. The unit works well. The tractor and all implements are always in a garage. I removed it from my BX24 in order to store it for the summer. I noticed about a 3 x 1 inch spot on the top of the blower near the Kubota logo where the paint had come off. I thought maybe I dropped something on it so I masked it, primed it with Por15 and sprayed it with a few coats of Kubota orange. Two days later, I removed the masking tape to check out my paint job. The area under the masking tape was now bare steel. The blue masking tape pulled the original Kubota paint off the blower - no primer, just bare steel. Does anyone know if this is a problem with these blowers. I have not talked with my dealer yet. Thanks.

Did you operate it along salted roads? Once salt gets under paint or powder coating it is all over.

Hi Lynnmor, Thanks for the reply. No, I only use it on my own driveway, no salt. When I pulled the masking tape off, there was fresh bare steel and the original paint was adhered to the back of the tape. No corrosion - just shiny, brand new looking steel. There is no primer.

Seems like it was not prepped correctly. I'm going to call the dealer but I doubt they will do anything.

Powder coat 'paint' is NOT PAINT ,in the traditional sense.....it's plastic granules, that's heated up to 'melt' onto the steel. Once there's a pinprick, knife cut ,anything to allow water under it...it's game over.
Unless the steel is properly cleaned, dried and powder cost is applied with correct voltage, temperature ,humidity and then properly baked( correct temperature and duration), power coat will not 'bond' to the steel.
The only way to fix a PC failure is to sandblast to remove 100% of it, and get 'tooth' on the steel then use a good primer and then real paint( epoxy seems the best).

Good explanation of the process - Thanks. You would think Kubota would actually paint these with a coating that would withstand the conditions that the attachment is used for. I baby this thing. I like Kubota but this leaves me wondering.

Probably not a true kubota blower. On the smaller front mounted blowers, kubota and massey were using the same blower. Which were made by a third party company. My 24hp massey has the same blower as the small kubotas, just with a slightly different mounting system.

I view powder coating as something that's often not done well enough to provide a durable and long-lasting finish. Here's a picture of a snow blower I sold along with my L3200. This picture was taken about 5 years after I refurbished it. The prep amounted to scraping loose paint off. Then the metal and any remaining paint were sanded and cleaned. The coating applied was direct-to-metal Pittsburgh AUE370 (?) that held up quite well.
