21 year old b7500hst overheated due to trash in radiator,I think. Have refilled coolant, cooled overnight and it cranks and runs smooth, but temp gauge maxed out in the red, even after disconnecting and reconnecting battery. Took dash out,no corrosion that I can see. Any ideas would be really helpful. Thanks.

Get an infrared thermometer and check the temperatures at the top and bottom of the radiator (on the hoses). That will tell you what is happening in the radiator.

I was told the temp sender was on the right rear of the head, but I’ve had no success finding it. Am I looking in the right place? Reason is temp gushed stuck at max temperature after cooling all night. Goes back to minimum when I turn off switch. Back to max with switch on. Thanks.

Did you clean the radiator both on the outside and the inside? Just because the coolant is clean-looking doesn't mean that the block doesn't have rust inside the passages that are preventing proper cooling.

Is this just a gauge issue or does the engine still overheat ?

Temp sending unit right rear side of the head.
Disconnect the wire and gauge should go back to 0 and grounding it should shoot to max.

Finally found sender and got these old arthritic fingers on the plug, and TARNATION,gauge went back to working normally. Caught my breath and put a little emery cloth on the spade and a gob of dielectric grease in the plug. Ain’t bad for the first mechanical malfunction since Moby Dick was a minnow. Thanks again……bunches.
