Hey everyone, we bought a m9540, the dealer (non Kubota!) fully serviced it before handover. It turns out they filled trans with the loader extended and after using the tractor for 2 hours with a flail mower, the side shift was leaking although all fittings were tight and when I pulled the dipstick it was pouring out. Now it seems the upper settings for the pto isn't engaging and the side shift doesn't move freely it seems jammed.Im hoping it's not broken, is it possible the pto clutch has too much ch oil on it and isn't gripping? I'm loathe to let oil out.Any advice/experience much appreciated

Hi,
check the operator / service manual and set oil level correctly at the right temperature (cold or hot). Not enough is bad and too much is bad too.

And the tractor should be on level ground.

FEL being raised or lowered has little affect on hyd oil level in reservoir especially not to the extent of hyd oil pouring out of hyd oil dipstick hole when FEL is lowered. Over filling hyd reservoir can lead to heating of hyd oil.

My guess is dealer over-filled trans reservoir hoping to disguise a hyd operational problem.

What are you referring to as side shift? I'll guess you're referring to the manual 2 speed. Manual 2 speed shifter on my M7040 gets very difficult to move if I don't keep shift linkages well lubricated

Why would you be "loathe" to correct oil level? If its overfull - correct it. Worry about any damage if and when you actually experience it.

By "side shift" I assume that's sliding the mower back and forth? That could be more of a coupler problem than anything to do with tractor oil level over full. More details on the PTO complaints would be helpful. What are upper settings?

Appreciate the replys, cheers.by side shift I mean the hydraulic side shift on the flail mower to shift mower left or right of tractor.
The Man Al says to lower all implements to the ground to servicec transmission, surely the rams for loader would contain a good few liters of oil?

The dealer seems honest and has a good reputation, I am really hoping he isn't covering anything up!

By upper settings I mean the short black handled lever above the trans dipstick, that is the pto speed selecter? When I used it yesterday the pto was not engaging when the lever was in the upper position.

I will ring the Kubota workshop this morning and see what they say, I will drain out surplus oil but it does smell a bit burnt to me now although the oil has only had maybe 4 hours operating time since servicing.

Fingers crossed it's not bad.

The PTO clutch is a wet clutch and is under fluid all the time, so being over full would not do anything.

But if the oil is being air entrained that will affect level and cause it to burp out and can cause all sorts of odd operation issues.
Did the fluid look like a milkshake when you opened the fill port?

When the cylinders move the oil from one side is going back into the tank but the other side is filled with oil. The difference in volume is only the cylindrical piece sticking out.

All excellent information guys, thank you so much. The oil isn't milkshake like it just looks quite grey for brand new oil supposedly when it's coming out the dipstick.

You might want to ask what oil the dealer used. Was it a complete change?
