Hello,
I recently discovered the output shaft seal on my HX10 rotary cutter was shot when smoke started coming from the gearbox. I ordered a new seal, but should I replace the bearings as well? It seems to still rotate fine, but I'm not sure if any damage was done when it ran out of oil.

Open it up to determine what is damaged. You might find that the gears are toasted also. No way to know until you take it apart. Once apart you can decide what parts you will need and if it is worth fixing vs. replacing the gear box completely. Sometimes the complete unit cost less than the parts to repair it.

'smoke' !!! That ain't a good sign. Sounds like excessive friction 'inside the box'...
A complete teardown/inspection/rebuild is in order and as another said, a new box might be cheaper than a handful of parts with 'some assembly required'.
