I got a smokin good deal on another GF1800 mower. Wouldn't start. Got is home and it took me an hour to get it running. Bad starter. 972 hours on it too.
It runs great, but won't shut off with the key. Getting no power to the shutoff solenoid. I'm guessing the combination box, that's where the power comes from looking at the wiring diagram, Does anyone know of a repair or a work around other than putting a pull cable on the lever? Thanks.

Did some more digging-- If the fuel pump is disconnected, the stop solenoid works perfectly. With the pump connected, the stop solenoid chatters exactly in time with the fuel pump, and does not retract when you shut the key off. I tried a known good combi box, checked all the grounds- even added another ground. Still no stop. Really looking for ideas here!

Two questions:

1) What did you do again?

2) Can you post the electrical diagram here?

I think you would find you’d get better responses if you use a thread title that actually has some meaning.

Such as: “GF1800 engine will not turn off…need help!” Or similar…

Good points! I'll make sure to keep that in mind.
What I did again was buy another GF 1800-- This makes the 4th one. I've been cleaning, doing a little restoration, getting them running like they should and selling. This last one is a 4x4, 60 inch deck with 972 hours. Going to keep this one I think. It will likely get a full on restoration over the winter.

Electrical diagram is in the operator manual- I'll figure out how to extract that one page and post it.

Cool - I love restorations (large toll on my body though)!

Maybe the problem is the solenoid? do you have another to try?

On my RTV resto, the stop solenoid just went poof one day and died without warning.
One other thought I had - is it possible that wires for solenoid/pump are melted together?

Tell ya what I did. I simply installed a nice pull knob on the dash of my G2160. Looks like it was built that way. I don't use a throttle type you would normally see for this. I bought a couple of them years ago. I like the setup since it does not stay in place (unless you tighten the collar) (think Motorcycle type throttle cable). At the end of mowing, I simply turn off the key, pull the black knob on the dash, engine shuts off.

I have thought about that. With the rear mounted engine it would take at least a 72" cable. And routing it would be tough. The steering column is already pretty full with wiring harnesses and it's all plastic.

Oh OK, I just now looked up a photo of one. I had no idea that is what they were. Pretty unique. I've seen some other brands like that as well JD and such. That is pretty cool. Sort of the best of 0 turn with a conventionally driving machine. That would be an ideal machine for my property

I have one for sale- I'm going to keep the 4x4. but I have the 2 wheel drive I've used all summer for sale.
Thanks no. If I were to tell wife (CFO) I wanted a different machine I think you'd be seeing what happened to me on the evening news :D

I for sure understand that-- My bride about had a stroke when I told her I'd bought another one.. That's 4 this year. I buy them not running, for parts, or what ever. So far I've been lucky- every one has been an fairly easy fix. Claen them up, fix what they need, full service and sell.

Finally got it-- wiring diagram attached:

Another little note- I disconnected the fuel pump and it worked (shut down) perfectly. Checked the resistance thru the pump. Manual says 20 ohms, the pump was like 3.2 ohms. Replaced the fuel pump and it starts, stops and now works like it should.
