i am pretty sure the steering box on my G1800 needs an overhaul. It looks pretty daunting to get to it The steering has been pretty loose for a few years and finally something bigger happened like a collapsed bearing perhaps What needs to come out to get to it?

Hi,

in short:
- remove cover under steering wheel
- remove steering wheel and shaft
- remove PTO linkage
- remove engine speed lever
- remove instrument panel
- remove panel assembly (frame holding instruments and steering wheel)
- remove seat
- remove fender
- remove step (floor panel)
- remove steering linkages from steering box arm
- remove steering box

Do you have a workshop manual?

In my case the problems with steering play were mainly front axle pivot and steering linkage joints, maybe you should check those first. But remaining play is from steering box, working on that.

See also G1800/1900 front axle pivot repair and G1800/1900 front axle modifications and other posts in this thread regarding steering linkage repairs.

Tons of "wander" in my G2160. Last time I was under it for service here (a couple weeks ago) thinking the worst that it was the front axle bushing I checked. Wonder of all wonders the bushing is tight. Axle has no real "play" in it. Yet it's like piloting a boat. Have not really found the source of it yet. Likely never will. I think Lugbolt has indicated it's a "curse" of that model.
For now, I live with it and enjoy the easy power steering
