I'd put this question in my tach/oil pressure thread. But, no response. Likely got buried. Anyway coolant temp sensor thread on G2160 with D782 anyone know that thread size? Will I be running into British sizes yet again? NPT or metric?

I have no idea, but many years ago I purchased a thread gauge kit and it has been used many times to figure out what thread is being used.

Probably will not be NPT.

Probably will be BSPP with a sealing washer.

Might be tapered British pipe thread but I doubt it.

Thats the best I can do except direct you to measure it and see if you can figure it out or take the plug to a shop for hydraulic fittings and ask them if they can figure it out.

Maybe point me to a decent not expensive thread gauge?
This should help

There are not many good options for cheap versions that I know of.

BSPT = British Standard Pipe Taper
A lot of the euro gauges will have the adapter in the kits.

Most theads can be identified with a $20 digital caliper and a thread chart downloaded for free off the internet. The major OD of BSP is unique - thread pitch is not.

And calipers are useful for other things as well

Calipers I have. Just no way of determining the actual threads. I can pretty much eyeball most but only if I know in advance I'm dealing with metric or SAE. But throwing British is a whole new thing for me.
It could be British threads are used in my Toyotas and I'd never know because I simply am not "modding" them.
And as mentioned elsewhere, when I had my little Honda 4514 everything was metric on it including sensor threads.
Which is why the Kubota threw a curveball at me

1 inch = 25.4 mm. You can specify any thread using inch or metric units. Many thread charts contain both.

British pipe threads are an inch based standard just like NPT but both can be specified using metric units if you prefer.

BSP major diameter is specified to 4 places in decimal inches just like NPT.

BSP thread pitch is specified in threads per inch just like NPT.

The taper of BSP threads is 3/4" per foot just like NPT.

The most obvious difference is the major diameter of the thread and a caliper will tell you what you have.

A less obvious difference is the flank angle of BSP is 55 degrees as opposed to 60. Thats hard to see even with a thread gauge.

Another difference is BSP threads have a radiused crest and NPT threads are flat. You can feel that with your finger and see it with a magnifying glass.

Now my head is spinning. Only thing I knew about British sizing is from helping my buddy when he was restoring his old 66 Triumph motorcycle MANY years ago. And he had to buy a whole set of British Whitworth tools. Even though they looked like good ol SAE tools i.e. 3/8" wrench etc, they were not the same

Heres some more head spinning msterial:

Notice that everything is specified in imperial (inch) units but the labeling of the spanners (wrenches) identifies the size of the thread not the hex it fits ....
