We are on our way home (CT) from FL and yesterday afternoon, as we were driving, my wife looked up the Hampton Inn in Petersburg, VA on her phone. She called and made a reservation. It was a lot more than we would normally pay, $250, but we were tired at that point so we took it.

When I checked in the clerk just offhandedly mentioned it was booked through Expedia. WTF! The normal room rate was $141.

Obviously Expedia has the keywords - Hampton Inn Petersburg VA - paid for so they come up 1st in a search.

Always check the actual URL to see where you are going! I always do but the wifey didn't this time.

Even the charge on my credit card looks like it came from the Hampton Inn. Really slimy

Good tip. It’s scary what can happen in the new Information Age.

I regularly get scam email alerts about my Spectrum Cable account failing to auto-pay….click here to rectify ASAP.

I pay by paper check….

I get emails and phone calls all the time about my spectrum cable account too.

The only "Cable" TV or Internet out here, is a 30 year old telephone line that was abandoned 15 years ago.

In our case, we use Spectrum.

Years ago, I've gotten phone calls about bank accounts we don't have, but there have been occasions it claims to represent our bank.......later evolved into to emails and text messages.

We recently picked up several hundred feet of road frontage in a land swap with a neighboring developer. It’s 3.4 acres of vacant land with a mostly collapsed barn and a garage rotten due to holes in the roof and walls. 25 years ago, the then owner removed the half rotten, falling down farmhouse.

According to Zillow, there’s a 1856SF four bedroom house there on 4.9 acres. It has a fireplace and an address (which makes no sense based on the other addresses on the road). Parcel number listed is nonsense. Even the property tax history is complete fiction. Only accurate thing in the listing is the picture. It’s a little vacant field by the road with trees and another little field behind it. The remains of the buildings are buried in trees.

Now I get at least one voice mail and two texts daily from random numbers wanting to buy my non-existent house at a non-existent address. Blocking them gets tiresome but if I don’t it’s even worse. I can’t imagine actually selling anything to these idiots.
