My L3901DT came with a plastic looking cover on the PTO spline from the factory and was wondering if it is a good idea to leave it on or take it off? I don't do a lot with the PTO and was wondering if the splines will rust with the cover on it? I haven't taken it off yet so I don't know if there is grease on the shaft that would help protect it or not.

I would make sure that it is well coated in a oil film and rubbed down and keep it covered. Does the cover have a weep hole in the bottom ?

I have an L3800. The manual says to leave it on when not being used. Mine is covered with grease, so leaving it off would subject it to dirt.

Older model of tractors came with a piece of clear tubing cut to length to cover the splines.

Could go to your local hardware store and buy 6" of tubing that fits snug. Don't need the end covered, it's just a protector.

For reference, here is the section of the manual that talks about leaving the "PTO shaft cap" in place:

Thanks to rk1475 for telling me that it was in the manual, I should have know better to look there first
