Does anyone know what this rifle is or who made it and when?

Hint, only 1500 ever existed and it's 45+ years old but shoots sub moa at 250 yards..,..

Kinda of looks like a model 1500, but I don't think they are 45+ years old. I think they were made in the 80s in Japan for Winchester.

No, not close but a good guess. I'll give a little hint, it wears a Smith and Wesson brand on the buttstock.

It's a safe queen though I have shot it and built loads for it. Bought it with cosmoline in the tube and action. Because it's so rare I have it insured for actual value not replacement value.

7.62 x 54 is correct. I'll give another hint. Build date was 1964 and it has a Paul Mauser 98 Small action with a double claw extractor, engine turned bolt and lapped raceways.

That really narrows it down especially when you keep in mind that it's branded Smith and Wesson and the furniture is unique to the builder too.

The builder is very popular today but not with firearms.

Bingo. 1964 Husky. 1500 imported. Paul Mauser 98 small action, double claw extractor. Husky didn't just make chainsaws (Like Maico didn't just make hearing aids and Swarovski just don't produce crystal figures).

Nice thing about a Husky is, using the Husky online data, you can trace a firearm right back to it's inception.

Very accurate at distance rifle sending handloads, I load 165 Bergers in Lapua brass jumped 0.038 off the lands and yes, they will feed through the internal magazine lips.

I'd never take it hunting because of one, it's rarity and two, wood furniture tends to absorb moisture and impact accuracy, I prefer a carbon fiber stock, besides, they are almost indestructible.

When I acquired it, I thought about not shooting it but changed my mind in as much as I wanted to see just how accurate a 1964 stick would be. Other than the clunky trigger (which I've reworked), it's quite a shooter.

MOA at 250 is excellent for any production rifle, exceptional for a '64 vintage stick.

You got it.:D

I need to post up another sometime. I own more.

Thanks. It is nice to have my own private 300 yard shooting range where I can pursue my hobby (guns) with no pressure and no one else around which isn't always the case. All my hunting friends, the Township supervisor and a couple local LE use my range too.

I guess the best part is, my reloading bench and supplies are 75 yards from the shooting bench so I can play with loadings and jumps conveniently.

Does not get much better then stepping outside to your own range, especially at the 300 mark, good stuff. I have a 100 yd lane with a good back stop to sight in and get some trigger time for my rifles. The local conservation club is near by when I need to tap out to longer distances, which is quite frequent.

Both these seem unusual to me.

The 7.62x54 Rimmed Russian military cartridge in a S&W imported sporting rifle? What users were they aiming at?

Mauser 98 design with twin extractors? To handle the rimmed cartridge?

Thanks,

Bruce
