L3301 HST quit running at idle

Regarding your last paragraph, my previous comment you refer to was merely a figure of speech, a bit of humor, and though I could respond further to yours, I’ll just thank you and say this is not the forum for serious religious discussion. 🙂

Yes, gotta get me some. It’s like an arms race in my shop, only I’m competing against myself….

L3301 HST quit running at idle

Gentlemen (I don’t think there are any ladies on this thread), I received my starter way early and was able to replace it today. Problem is resolved. Bench tested the old one and it is shot. Will do a post-mortem on it later today to see what might have failed. Some observations: This forum is...

Thanks, Moots. Might have to get an assist from someone with smaller hands.

ONE MORE…….. It’s a bear getting the starter off. I can work around the loader, but there is some kind of either coolant, hydraulic or electrical conduit plumbing running right across the side next to it, terminating in a large nut in front of the hydraulic dip stick. I don’t want to remove this...

PS - will try external battery sources a jump alternative, but jumping from my truck was actually my first reflex and it didn’t work. Just can’t remember if I did that before or after discovering and replacing the 40A blown fuse. Best try it again…

L3301 HST quit running at idle

Great info! This is the level of detail I like. I had jumped from the battery to the starter post - no luck. Battery trickle-charged to 12.8V by this morning - no luck. Given the mechanical rattling sound before it quit, and the puff of whitish smoke from that area (I was still behind the...

I’ll try it. The starter with loader attached is very hard to get to. If I don’t have to take it off, all the better, but the noise it made before the tractor quit makes me think it’s the starter.

L3301 HST quit running at idle

Thanks to all of you for your experience and advice. Thx to John for his phone number and the call. I have ordered a new starter. As we discussed on the phone, it may be that it stayed engaged while I operated the tractor (20 minutes or so), thus the mechanical grinding noise when it finally...

Thanks to you and all who have been assisting. Jumped Terminal on starter that is connected to battery to terminal on solenoid. Terminal connected to battery sparked. I am going to try to tow the tractor closer to my shop.

I am really baffled by this. I don’t want to buy a new solenoid unless I absolutely have to.

Would anyone know how a bad starter acts or doesnt act on one of these? Does it make a racket at idle when it goes out?
