Pup slipped off of our elevated walkway on Saturday. It's only about 2.5 feet off the ground. Spent the evening at the pet emergency center to get a diagnosis. They think its just a sprain in the tarsals. I think so too, but now I remember how bad I felt whenever there was an injury/issue with one of our dogs. :(

He's putting weight on it now and will be heading to the vet for the first time with me tomorrow. He's growing so fast at a little over 30 lbs at 15 weeks.

I’m sitting in my recliner wasting most of the morning on the internet

Callie is 14 mos old, loves to play “fetch the ball”….and has incredible patience…. it’s been 15 minutes now and she is still hopeful I’ll get the idea.

Anyone ever see a monkey hump a football? (We use a similar less appropriate phrase at work😉)

Well, Huey, this is our minister of defense, he is a pretty destructive little guy…we’ve replace I don’t know how many jolly balls (toys for horses and very durable)…well he keeps destroying them. Anyway the spousal unit found something bigger and supposedly durable for horses…so he gets a surprise gift after work…(oh my did we laugh…I tried to keep it a clean pic…I think you can imagine…I told spousal unit she just gave our pup a blowup doll)

Got some bad news from the vet today after 2nd review of X-rays. Cody does have a horizontal fracture between the bone and the growth plate. :(

That means another month of Rimadyl and Trazadone to keep him calm. That sucks.

I had plans to have lots of fun and training with him this spring...now I just hope that he can heal completely. Tough on a young pup.

I wound up moving my "office" to the ground floor so I didn't have to keep carrying this little load up and down the steps countless times in the day. Had the top and bottom stair entrances blocked and had to hurdle over them while carrying the pup. Not too safe.

What I didn't think about was the proximity of my desk to the couch.

Good lord he looks a lot bigger in those pics today. I see the lads is in front of the TV…spaghetti westerns seem to be a favorite of my 4 legged friends. Maybe they would cheer your up too. I hope he is healing.

Lasted less than one day…destroyed the blow up doll before I got home from work today….i don’t want to know how, but I suspect he had a big time.

There's a lot of joy with a new pup and I just want to say how much I've enjoyed seeing your photos and reading your stories and look forward to following along as Cody grows. As the time with my dog draws to an end and the feeling of impending loss and sadness builds, seeing Cody with so much life ahead of him, and knowing that he has a good home makes a difference. Like many here I've lost a lot of dogs over the years and it never gets easier, and it shouldn't.

I've had Rainee since February of 2016. She was found on Facebook by an ex-girlfriend less than a week after one of my lovely Rottweilers had passed away. The idea was that we would foster her until a good home could be found. More than 9 years later she's still with me and I wouldn't change a thing. I don't know how old she is but 11 or 12 seems reasonable, and maybe a little older than that. She's been an amazing dog and such a great companion and she's introduced me to the wonderful world of 40lb dogs having had 80lb or bigger dogs my entire life.

She's been having Librela shots for a few months which seems to help with mobility but she's had three small seizures that I know over the past few weeks, and possibly more. We've stopped the Librela this month to see if it's causing the seizures. I recently started giving her Myos on the recommendation of her vet to try to counteract muscle loss, but overall she's not doing great, and I feel like we're in the week to week phase now, and sometimes it feels like day to day. She falls and stumbles all the time, her gait is almost robotic like she has to think how to walk and control all four legs, and seems to get "stuck" cognitively when doing things such as heading outside to pee. She's eating well, and doesn't show any signs of being in pain, and I hope she surprises me and is still here at Christmas but I can't say that I believe it to be possible.

I've worked from home for the last five years or so which means that I've had her close to me for most of that time and she will be missed more than I can put into words. She's on the bed next to me as I sit here and type, and this was her yesterday when I rudely work her up trying to take her photo as she slept. She's never more than a few feet away, and as she nears the end she's increasingly anxious when she can't see me. She's so much more tired than she ever used to be and spends much of her time sleeping.

I have a road-trip coming up and won't be able to take her with me. She would love to ride in the new truck for days on end but it's just not possible to bring her out East since I'll be combining a couple of pick ups with a week of work. My neighbor really likes her and does a great job of taking care of her when I'm away, but I will be more than a little anxious about her during this upcoming separation.

"Grief is the price we pay for love" .... no truer words were ever spoken.

Some drugs (like gabapentin) cause a change in the dog’s gait and behavior. Look up ataxia or ataxic gait. That new drug may have that as a side effect so you might want to try something else?

Good luck

1911 - sorry to hear that. They just don't live long enough for us.

I must say that I'm sort of unhappy with myself this time around with the new pup. I'm having a very difficult time with my patience (or lack thereof) and I don't fully understand why. Perhaps I'm comparing this new pup with my last best friend. I know, that's not a fair comparison. I have to keep repeating to myself that he's only 16 weeks old. He's a smart pup but chooses when he feels like listening.

Regarding seizures- my last dog Dakota had many of them. They were agonizing to watch. The frequency of the seizures subsided when I tossed the flea/tick collar in the garbage. It was the Sorresto collar by Baier. I will never use that product again.

Russell - thanks for that timely post about gabapentin. I just picked that up today along with another round of Trazodone for the pup. I don't understand why I'm supposed to use both to keep the pup calm for another 3 weeks. It just seems excessive to me. There is no more swelling in his foot and he doesn't exhibit any lameness at all.

hmm, just picked that up today. I'm reluctant to use it. Vet said is sort of a pain blocker and would help to sedate him. The pup doesn't seem to be in any pain at all (no more swelling) and he's putting full weight on his hind foot.

I also have trazodone for sedation.

As much as they drive you insane, don't ever forget how much they love you.

She was on Gabapentin but we stopped it a couple of months ago due to coordination issues and the known possibility of undesirable neurological effects. Now she's taking a low dose of Carprofen in the hope that it's the Librela causing seizures, and that it'll be enough to keep her comfortable.

We have a new dog (mutt Brittany/?) that is on Trazadone for anxiety and it definitely helps with that but is certainly a sedative action. He was being given a whole pill twice a day at the shelter but we have cut that down to just 1/4 pill per day. I tried zero today but that didn’t work out well, I was working outside and when I came back in he had gotten into a box of supplements (Purina Pro Plan Calming Care). It comes in little packets (like FortaFlora) and there was probably 20 of the packets left. All I found was the torn up box, no packets at all so I assume they went down the hatch. Purina says not really much to worry about since it is a digestive supplement and in paper packets.

That supplement has calmed him down which surprised me, I figured it was just a snake oil but it worked in just a few days.

The gabapentin is for pain and I don’t really like it since it affects the mind too much for my liking. We use it for a few days if needed for pain but get off of it as soon as possible.

I too am not particularly patient with this guy since he tends to whine and that is bothering me more than it should. He is sensitive to any scolding and it makes me feel bad that I raise my voice at all to him. But we will get there eventually is what I always think. I try to be kinder and he tries to be less whiny!

Read the vet’s instructions since they often say “as needed” or something similar at the end of the dosage instructions. If you don’t think he is in pain, I would push back on the vet and see if they agree to not use it. They often provide pain medication just for the owner to use as needed since it is easier than not providing it.

@McMXi - so sorry to hear of the pup’s struggles.

Like many folks here, been down that road a few times.

Always think of Ollie. Lost him New Years Day a few years ago.

IMG_6367.jpeg

Best wishes.

It’s hard….. :(

@dirtydeed - The Mrs. was real tight with Ollie. Running buddies.

She was the one that wanted to get another Boxer quickly.

She had some similar issues when Geddy was little too. No patience for him, and would scold him for normal puppy antics. (He was house trained in a two/couple days - real pleasure.)

Like you, she recognized the intolerance. She missed Ollie terribly.

Feelings have long-since passed - but we both will call him “Ollie” every once in a while….;)

You’ll get there. Give Cody some patience and he’ll win you over pretty soon…😉

Like us, you might call him Dakota every once in a while…..

That’s not a bad thing, but a testament to the great boy you lost…..😞
